The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) in NSW faced an urgent crisis when the Varroa mite, a threat to honeybee populations, was detected at the Port of Newcastle.
Problem 1
Rapid team assembly
The crisis prompted the need to rapidly scale the workforce by quickly assembling a large team of qualified field technicians to execute the eradication plan.
Solution
We quickly sourced and mobilised a skilled workforce of six experienced field technicians, ensuring they were ready to begin work immediately.
Outcome
The team was ready to start by Monday morning and swiftly grew to over 30 technicians across seven locations, effectively meeting the immediate labour demands.
Problem 2
Qualified technicians
The DPI required field technicians qualified to handle hazardous chemicals as part of the mite eradication efforts.
Solution
We immediately created a comprehensive training plan to upskill a pool of suitable candidates. This plan included formal chemical handling certifications, on-site supervision, and thorough onboarding to ensure full compliance with safety protocols.
Outcome
All technicians completed the necessary chemical handling certifications.
Problem 3
Site access
Field technicians needed 4WD vehicles to safely navigate the terrain and reach remote and rugged areas for the mite eradication operation.
Solution
We created a logistical plan to source and manage 4WD vehicles for all field sites. The vehicles were allocated according to each team’s needs, ensuring they had the necessary tools to carry out their duties in the field.
Outcome
All required vehicles were sourced, securely stationed at each site, and closely monitored by our supervisors to ensure safe and efficient operations across all locations.
